1995
This project (sponsored by various London arts and academic institutions in the context of a larger group exhibition entitled “Desiring Practices”), involved the selection of six sites around the city of London, and one site in Paris, and the rotation of objects form one storefront display to another. Each displacement was executed to produce a particular reading through disjunction. For example, extremely feminine hand-crafted women's hat were displaced to the vitrine of the Royal Institute of British Architects Bookshop, in the lobby displaying the names of all RIBA medal winners, all of whom were men (except for two partnerships); real estate listings from a poor, largely black neighborhood in London were displayed in the hat shop which was situated between two real estate agencies in one of the most expensive neighborhoods in London; a poster from a previous exhibition by the artist was placed in a vitrine which normally held club listings on a popular shopping street in London, and the club listings were displayed in the real estate agency window as described above, etc.
